Letter to Future Students

Dear New English 110.01 Student:

English 110.01 is a lot simpler than some people seem to think. I was absolutely dreading College level English. I think part of the reason English was easier than I thought was because of all of the resources available to us students.

A major resource that is always available is your TA. They will help you with everything they can whether it be finding a source or even just giving you a nudge in the right direction. Take their advice. The feedback my TA gave me helped me to better my Secondary Source Integration and my Analytical Research Paper.

I also suggest going to all of your classes, for other reasons than the lowered grades. Even if you have already learned about the topic of class that day your TA will teach you tips and tricks to help make writing your papers much easier. The majority of the in-class activities helped make difficult things, like writing a thesis, super easy.

With quarters class goes by quickly and it is one thing that does make English 110.01 a bit challenging. You just finish one paper and the second is due a week later. It is a lot of writing in a short period of time. The only advice I can give on this is don't fall behind and don't procrastinate. Both could cause big problems later on in class.

A final thing I suggest is getting to know your classmates. Most of the lectures at OSU are huge and there are too many people to get to know but an advantage of English is that the classes are small and intimate. If you find that your TA is not helping you in the way you want you can always ask your classmates for help. Plus you can never have enough friends. I wish that I hadn't waited until the last couple weeks to get to know a few people in my class.
