Letter to Future Students

Dear New English 110.01 Student:

English 110.01 is a lot simpler than some people seem to think. I was absolutely dreading College level English. I think part of the reason English was easier than I thought was because of all of the resources available to us students.

A major resource that is always available is your TA. They will help you with everything they can whether it be finding a source or even just giving you a nudge in the right direction. Take their advice. The feedback my TA gave me helped me to better my Secondary Source Integration and my Analytical Research Paper.

I also suggest going to all of your classes, for other reasons than the lowered grades. Even if you have already learned about the topic of class that day your TA will teach you tips and tricks to help make writing your papers much easier. The majority of the in-class activities helped make difficult things, like writing a thesis, super easy.

With quarters class goes by quickly and it is one thing that does make English 110.01 a bit challenging. You just finish one paper and the second is due a week later. It is a lot of writing in a short period of time. The only advice I can give on this is don't fall behind and don't procrastinate. Both could cause big problems later on in class.

A final thing I suggest is getting to know your classmates. Most of the lectures at OSU are huge and there are too many people to get to know but an advantage of English is that the classes are small and intimate. If you find that your TA is not helping you in the way you want you can always ask your classmates for help. Plus you can never have enough friends. I wish that I hadn't waited until the last couple weeks to get to know a few people in my class.

Good luck in English 110.01.

Sincerely,

Kristie McGee

A foodway in my family is to have ham and turkey with every holiday meal. We have both because only half of our family eats turkey and only half eats ham. Another reason I think we do this is because we always have a large number of people at our get togethers and just one turkey or one ham wouldn't feed everyone.

I know that, for most people, this isn't a widely done tradition. Most people have a turkey at Thanksgiving and ham on the other holidays. Most of the people I have talked to about it think that it is weird to have both meats for all the holidays, but I like that we do this because it's more delicious food AND there is much more to go around!

Possible Primary Sources

I still have not quite decided what I want to do my research paper on yet. I'm torn between doing foodways of the rich verses foodways of the poor or foodways of a specific culture.

This photo is a possibility if I decide to do foodways of the rich verses foodways of the poor. I think that this photo is a good depiction of what we think of when we think about poor people and acquiring food. I like that the image is of what I assume to be poor folk from another country. All the faces shown are very gloomy. Something I thought was interesting about the photo is that all the people in the food lineup are all men and children and there is only what appears to be one woman.

On the other hand if I choose to do a specific culture I could use this book cover. My original thought when picking a culture was to do American foodways, however when googling the topic African American foodways dominated the screen. I then changed my mind and decided on African American foodways because I know nothing about it. Something I thought was strange about this image is the lack of meat in the photo. The thing I like most about the book cover is where it says "Explorations of History & Culture" on the front cover. I think it sums up exactly what shapes a cultures foodways.

For my second image and the text that goes along with it please use the following link.

Hi there I'm Kristie and my favorite meal of all time is a hotdog with ketchup and mustard, baked beans, and mac & cheese. Growing up this was a very popular lunchtime meal in my family. I don't even really know why I enjoy this meal so much. I guess it just has something to do with habit and my childhood. I think these particular items just remind me of summer and picnics at my Grandma's house, I mean who doesn't have hotdogs at their picnics? I think my like for hotdogs goes back to summer picnics and how much fun they were with the whole family swimming and playing pool games and having a great time. I absolutely love summer and our family get-togethers and I think that shows in the foods I eat.
